The problem with sexual harassment and related hostile environment accusations is that it is the only infraction in the workplace (and now academia) that is totally at the discretion and definition of the accuser with virtually no objective standards for others to understand. For instance, theft of company property is clearly defined and easy to comprehend. It applies equally to employees and results in the same consequences. As for “sexual harassment” two people can say the same thing to another. If she likes one it’s permissible. If she dislikes the other, it’s a punishable offense. Apparently, This process has bled over into academia.
