The U.S. Open Tennis Tournament is over. I watched a number of matches; the virtuosity on display was amazing. But no television production seems to be free of woke notions and the Open was no exception. To the right of the court, throughout every match, was emblazoned a virtual message “50 Years Equal Pay,” meaning that, since 1973, female players have received the same prize money as male players. Equality’s a good thing, right?
As a retired 40+ year Employee Compensation and Benefits professional who most of my career in Fortune 100 companies, I too remarked on the fallacy of “equal pay” in professional tennis. All Compensation practitioners include equal work as a basis for true equal pay. I really can’t blame the male players for not complainingas they would be banned ,and we know that any male sports broadcaster would be fired for pointing out the inequity. Look at the grief John McEnroe took for stating that men are better players than women. It’s up to us in the non mainstream media to point it out whenever we here the lie of equal pay in tennis.
